Update: Twitter is now called X and parts of the interface have changed. The core account setup principles in this guide still apply.

1. Creating an Account

In your internet browser go to www.twitter.com, fill in your details and click ‘Sign up for Twitter’. The last field is your ‘Twitter handle’, this is essentially your username. There will be a blue tick to the right of this field when the username you choose is available.

2. What do you like & Who do you know?

Twitter will then prompt you to choose some interests, this is so they can suggest Twitter accounts for you to follow. You can choose some of these topics or you can continue without selecting any.
Twitter will now prompt you to follow specific accounts.

3. Your Logo

You can either upload a photo or take a photo using the camera on your computer. For a business account you may want your profile picture to be your logo or work that you’ve done. Once you have selected the image that you want to use you can us the slider to make the image bigger or smaller, to crop out anything around the edges.

4. Add some details

When you’re on the home page, showing your news feed, you will need to click the area on the top left that shows your name and your profile picture – this will take you to your profile page. Once there, click ‘Edit profile’ on the right.
You can now add a few details about your business, add a header photo (ideally 1500×500 pixels) and change your profile picture. You can also change your

5. Your First Tweet

You can either choose one of the tweets that Twitter suggests for you, or you can compose your own. Using a hashtag will mean that anyone searching for that hashtag will see your post. To create a hashtag just write # before the words you want to use. A hashtag needs to be all one word (no spaces).
